Not many people seem to have a problem with uploading a new profile image. It is more that the thumbnail never seems to look right. You need to be a Magician to figure out the automatic cropping rules Facebook abides by and applies to your image. On your personal profile thumbnail, you’re lucky if you are not beheaded in the image or be a tiny speck in the distance no one can make out who it is. On your fan page, your brand’s logo is cut off and you can only see a few letters of your companies name. Frustration level.... 10 out of 10 !!
Facebook Magic trick.
Facebook recommends that profile pictures are 200px wide. However, they don’t make it clear how the thumbnail is generated from this picture. Facebook magically crops images when generating a thumbnail, losing information around the edge and the end result is a surprise. So when you create your profile image allow a 12 pixel border (safe zone) around crucial information such as a brand name or logo to allow for automatic cropping. Then you can edit the thumbnail selection accordingly as per instructions below.
